What is an E-Bike?

An e-bike, short for electric bike or electric bicycle, is essentially a bicycle equipped with an electric motor that assists your pedaling effort. It offers the same experience as a regular bicycle but with extra power, making your rides faster, smoother, and less tiring.

In simple terms, e-bikes combine human pedaling power with an electric motor to make cycling easier and more accessible.

E-bikes come in various styles and configurations, including pedal-assist and throttle-only options. Pedal-assist e-bikes are the most common, where the motor only kicks in when you pedal.

This makes it feel natural and enhances the cycling experience. Throttle-based e-bikes, on the other hand, allow you to cruise without pedaling by simply twisting a handle or pressing a button.

Electric bicycles are becoming increasingly popular in Malaysia and around the world, especially in urban areas. They’re eco-friendly, efficient, and suitable for all types of riders—from daily commuters to adventure seekers.

Thanks to improved battery technology, e-bikes today offer longer ranges and better performance, giving users more confidence to go further.

This basikal is clearly a mode of transportation that reshaping the way people move. With zero emissions, low maintenance, and versatile usage, it’s no wonder that e-bikes are now seen as the future of sustainable mobility.

Why You Should Choose an Electric Bike?

Owning an electric bike—or e-bike—offers a wide range of benefits that make it an attractive alternative to traditional bicycles, scooters, or even cars. Whether you’re a daily commuter, recreational rider, or someone looking to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle, an e-bike can be a smart choice.

Firstly, electric bicycles offer cost-effective commuting. You don’t have to worry about petrol prices, parking fees, or tolls. Charging an e-bike costs significantly less compared to fueling a car. Plus, maintenance is simpler and more affordable.

Secondly, e-bikes are eco-friendly. In our urban centers like KL or Penang, where traffic congestion and pollution are major concerns. By choosing an electric bicycle, you’re reducing your carbon footprint and helping create a cleaner environment.

Another strong reason is convenience and efficiency. Electric bikes are perfect for short- to medium-distance travel. You won’t arrive at your destination drenched in sweat, and you can sneak between the gap through traffic smoother than with a car.

Health and fitness benefits are also notable. While you get electric assistance, you’re still pedaling and engaging your muscles, not fully depending on the electric power. This makes e-bikes suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels, especially seniors who want to stay active.

Accessibility is a big plus. For those who might struggle ascending over technical hills, long distances, or physical limitations, electric bikes provide the needed support without giving up the joy of cycling.

When compared to scooters or motorbikes, electric bikes are quieter, easier to ride, and require no licensing in most cases. Plus, you don’t need to worry about fuel or insurance.

Finally, the wide variety of electric bicycle models allows you to choose one that fits your lifestyle, whether it’s for daily commuting, weekend rides, or cargo transport. It’s more than just a trend—it’s a practical, future-ready solution.

Popular E-Bike Categories in the Market

Electric bikes are available in various categories to suit different riding needs and lifestyles. Whether you’re navigating the city or exploring mountain trails, there’s always an available model designed just for you.

City E-bikes

City e-bikes are designed for urban commuting. They offer comfort, efficiency, and easy handling for daily rides to work, school, or even grocery runs. Most city e-bikes come with practical features like integrated lights, fenders, racks, and comfortable upright seating. These e-bikes are popular in big cities like Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru, where traffic can be a headache.

Electric Mountain bikes

If off-road adventures are your thing, electric mountain bikes (e-MTBs) are built to tackle rough terrains. With powerful motors, high-capacity batteries, and suspension systems, they make uphill climbs easier and descents more thrilling. Whether you're exploring Bukit Kiara trails or forest routes in Sabah, an electric MTB can be your best companion.

Electric Hybrid bikes

Electric hybrid bikes combine the best of both worlds: road efficiency and a touch of off-road capability. They're versatile, making them perfect for mixed terrain—urban roads, bike paths, or light trails. Hybrid e-bikes are great for beginners or riders who want one bike that does it all.

Electric Gravel bikes

A rising star in the e-bike world, electric gravel bikes are made for long-distance rides across mixed terrain—dirt roads, gravel paths, and even pavement. They’re lightweight, agile, and come with drop handlebars for a road-bike feel, making them ideal for touring or bikepacking.

With these categories available, you can easily find the best electric bicycle that suits your journey—whether it's in the city, up a mountain, across a hybrid path, or on an adventurous gravel trail.

Features to Look When Buying an E-Bike

Choosing the right e-bike depends on understanding the key features that affect performance, comfort, and longevity. Here's what to consider:

Battery capacity & range

Battery size determines how far your e-bike can go on a single charge. Measured in watt-hours (Wh), higher numbers mean more range. A typical e-bike in Malaysia might range between 40–100 km per charge. If you plan to ride long distances or tackle hills, go for a larger battery and faster motor.

Motor types (hub vs mid drive)

Commonly an electric bike’s motor has two different placements, which are hub and mid drive. Hub motors are located in the wheels, usually quieter and less expensive. They’re perfect for flat city roads.

Mid-drive motors are positioned at the crank and offer better torque, especially for hills or mountain trails. Mid-drive systems are more efficient and provide a balanced ride.

Frame material & design

E-bike frames can be made from aluminum, steel, and carbon fiber. For electric city bikes, mountain bikes, and hybrid bikes, they used aluminum frames because of their durability & lightweight.

If you’re still looking for lighter electric bikes, opt for a carbon fiber frame, but it is slightly expensive compared to other materials. The design also matters; choose a frame geometry that suits your posture and purpose, like step-through frames for easy mounting.

Gearing & brakes

Look for gears that suit your terrain. More gear options offer flexibility in hilly areas. For brakes, hydraulic disc brakes are best, they provide strong stopping power and are more consistent in all weather conditions. Mechanical disc brakes are also decent but require more maintenance.

Understanding these features can help you make a smarter purchase and ensure your electric bicycle fits your lifestyle perfectly.

Tips Before Buying an Electric Bike

Buying an electric bicycle is a big decision, make sure you understand and consider some key points to make the best purchase. Here are some key tips to make sure you pick the right electric bicycle.

Find the right features

Determine your purchasing purpose. Is it for daily commuting, climbing hilly tracks, or even off-road adventures? This helps you decide on the motor power, battery range, and accessories.

Once you decide on your purpose and usage, this will help you to not overpay for features you don’t use.

Compare brand & warranties

Not all electric bike brands are equal! Make sure you buy from reputable manufacturers known for quality and after-sales support. Don’t forget to check the warranty period on the motor, battery, and frame.

Here, Polygon Bikes are known for their reliability, comfort, and power. Polygon Bikes always support their customers with a long warranty on their electric components. The other one is Marin Bikes, known for its tagline “fun to ride” You will get a precise, nimble, and powerful electric bike with excellent durability.

Test ride

Always try before you buy. A test ride helps you feel the bike’s weight, responsiveness, and comfort. This is especially important for beginners who may not be familiar with pedal assistance features on electric bikes.

Budget consideration

E-bikes can range from RM3,000 to over RM25,000. Set a realistic budget but remember—you get what you pay for. A slightly higher upfront cost can mean better components and a longer-lasting bike.

Tips in Maintaining an E-Bike

Proper maintenance helps you to get a long lifespan bike. Hence, don’t forget to regularly check your bike’s condition. Proper maintenance also ensures your bike to performing at its best.

Quick regular maintenance tips

Inspect your bike before every ride. Check tire pressure, brake function, and chain lubrication. A quick visual inspection can help prevent some issues on the road.

Before every ride, spend 2–3 minutes doing a basic inspection:

    • Tire Pressure: Press the tires with your thumb. If they feel soft, inflate them to the recommended PSI (usually printed on the tire sidewall). Riding with underinflated tires can reduce range and cause flats.
    • Brakes: Squeeze both levers and make sure the brakes engage firmly. If they feel loose or the stopping distance is too long, have them adjusted.
    • Chain & Drivetrain: Look at the chain. Is it dry or rusty? Apply a bicycle-specific chain lubricant if it looks dry. Wipe off excess oil with a clean rag.

Cleaning tips

Use a damp cloth and gentle soap to clean the frame. Avoid spraying high-pressure water directly on the motor or battery. Wipe down after wet rides to prevent rust. Here’s how you do it:

    • Use a bucket of water, mild soap, and a soft sponge or cloth.
    • Avoid high-pressure water hoses, as water can seep into sensitive areas like the motor and battery terminals.
    • Focus on cleaning the frame, wheels, chain, and gears. For the chain, use a brush or old toothbrush to remove dirt, then reapply lubricant.
    • After riding in rain or on muddy terrain, wipe down the bike immediately to prevent rust.

Charging do & don’ts

Always use the charger provided by the manufacturer. Don’t overcharge—unplug once full. Or you can charge up to 80% then unplug for longer lifespan battery. Avoid charging immediately after riding; let the battery cool down first.

    • Use only the charger that comes with your bike—third-party chargers may damage the battery.
    • Let the battery cool for at least 30 minutes after a ride before charging.
    • Avoid charging to 100% daily. Charging up to 80–90% helps extend battery life.
    • Unplug once it’s full—don’t leave it charging overnight unnecessarily.

Motor & battery care

Store your e-bike in a dry, cool place. Don’t expose the battery to direct sunlight or high temperatures for long periods. Service your motor regularly, especially if it is often used on rough terrain or long-distance cycling.

    • Store indoors in a cool, dry place—avoid direct sunlight, rain, or extreme heat.
    • Every few months, check battery connections for corrosion or loose fittings.
    • If your motor starts making odd noises or loses power, take it for a professional check-up. Routine servicing every 6 months is ideal, especially for riders who go on long or rugged rides.

Electric Bike’s FAQ

Have any thoughts about an electric bike in your mind? Let’s discover what everyone or maybe you wonder in your mind about this bike.

Can I ride an electric bike in the rain

Yes, almost all of the electric bikes in the market are water-resistant and can be ridden in the rain. However, avoid deep puddles and submerge the electric components including motor and battery.

Don’t forget to dry your bike after riding with a gentle cloth to prevent rust, corrosion, or even accidentally breaking your electric components.

How far can an electric bicycle go on a charge

The range depends on the battery size, rider weight, and the trails. A bigger battery means more range and power. Commonly an electric bike can travel around 40 to 100 Km in a single charge.

However, in Rodalink, our electric bikes can travel a minimum of 80 to 120 Km in a single charge! Curious? Check out our electric bicycle collections from Polygon and Marin here!

What's the lifespan of an e-bike battery?

A good quality lithium-ion battery can last between 500 to 1,000 charge cycles. With proper care, that’s equivalent to 3–5 years of use. Battery life will naturally decline over time, so always follow charging best practices and do routine check on the battery. When the battery drains quickly, it means you should replace it with a new one.

How fast can an electric bike go?

Here, most e-bikes are limited to 25km/h on the road. However, some electric bike models can reach speeds up to 45km/h, especially for off-road or sport use. Always check local regulations before riding.
