What Is a Bike Stand?

A bike stand is a practical bike accessory that allows you to park your bike safely without leaning on the ground or against a wall. This accessory is commonly used in urban and leisure bikes. However, it’s all about preferences, some cyclists also have their bike stands on their road bikes, mountain bikes, gravel bikes, and more. A bike stand is small, practical, and easy to use to park your bike safely. Gently engage the kickstand by pushing it down with your foot, then your bike is already parked safely.

Type of Bike Stands

To help cyclists park their bikes with no hassle, bike stands are created with main forms, side and bike centers.

Side Bike Stand

The side bike stand is the most common type in the market, attached to the rear wheel side, and can be folded away when not used. The side bike stand is lightweight & safe-spacing, ideal for urban environments where bike racks are not always available.

Center Bike Stand

The center bike stand, on the other hand, is attached under the bike crankset, offering superior stability for parking the bike. This type is ideal for parking a bike with heavier loads.

The choice of the types depends on the bike types & purpose however, cyclists also have their own preference in choosing which one suits them best. For example, the side bike stand is ideal for cyclists who love to cycle for running daily errands or on lighter bikes like road bikes and city bikes. On the other hand, the center bike stand is ideal for bikes with heavier loads like mountain bikes & touring bikes.

However, cyclists also have the right to choose based on their preferences. If they are more into simplicity, the side bike stand is ideal for it. Where the center bike stand offers greater stability for parking.

Bike Stand Materials

Bike stands used two materials in common. Aluminum and steel are used as the most common bike stand materials today. The reason behind it, because they offer an excellent balance between strength, durability, and weight

Benefits of Using a Bike stand

A bike stand is a simple, yet practical accessory to park your bike safely. Here are why investing in a bike stand is beneficial:

Protecting bike from falls

A bike stand keeps your bike upright and stable when it's not in use. Leaning your bike against a wall or placing it on the ground increases the risk of scratch damage.

Cleaning Efficiency

A practical bike stand holds your bike in place, giving you better access to maintenance. Either you're adjusting gears or lubricating the chain.

Maximizing Space-Savings

A bike stand allows you to park your bike neatly without taking up too much space in your garage, apartment, or small storage room. If you have multiple bikes, a bike stand ensures they are stored properly without leaning on each other, preventing scratch damage.

How to Install a Bike Stand

1. Choose the right bike stand for your bike

Before installing a bike stand, determine which type of stand suits your bike. You can choose either side kickstand or the center bike stand.

2. Gather the required tools

You'll typically need several tools like a hex key, a screwdriver, and a bike stand itself. Choose it based on your bike stand models.

3. Locate the kickstand mounting area

Commonly bikes are designed with a mounting plate near the chain stay or bottom bracket. If there is no mounting plate, you may need a universal clamp-style kickstand.

4. Position the kickstand

Place the kickstand bracket over the mounting area, aligning the holes with pre-drilled frame holes.

5. Insert & tighten the bolt

Insert the provided bolt through the mounting hole and tighten it using a hex key then, ensure the kickstand is securely fastened but not overtightened to avoid frame damage.

6. Adjust the kickstand length (if adjustable)

If your kickstand comes with an adjustable leg. Extend or shorten it to ensure the bike leans at a stable angle when parked.

7. Test the stability

Engage your bike stand and check for stability. If your bike wobbles, it's time to review your installation.

How to Choose the Best Bike Stand

Choosing the right bike stand is essential for maintaining your bike's condition, enhancing storage efficiency, and simplifying maintenance. Here are some simple ways to help you find the perfect bike stand based on your needs.

1. Consider your bike type and size

First of all, know your bike type with some factors to keep in mind such as frame size & weight, wheel size & tire width, and frame compatibility. Those factors are crucial because different bike stands accommodate different bicycles.

2. Choose the bike stand types

After considering your bike type & size, now you can choose whether you want to use side bike stands or center bike stands. We recommend choosing side bike stands for lightweight bikes such as road and city bikes. For heavier bikes, we suggest picking the center bike stands for better efficiency & stability.

3. Pay attention on their base design & material

Aluminum and steel are the most durable options. We suggest you choose one of these options.

4. Consider your budget

Bike stands range in price based on material, brand, and features. Premium bike stands to provide better durability while budget-friendly options can still be reliable for casual use.
